Newborn
(0-12 Weeks Old)
For Your New Bundle of Joy
What’s worse than an infant who doesn’t sleep through the night?
The fact that crying is their only verbal communication!
If only you knew exactly what’s wrong, you would make it right before they could even whimper!
Unfortunately, that is not the case. But fortunately, a solution exists.
Being “unsettled” is perfectly normal and pretty common for newborns. Their sleep cycles are erratic and so are their bodily functions, which contribute to their waking. Hunger, a wet or soiled diaper, and the lack of understanding of the concept of time all disrupt their slumber.
This disruption affects parents or caregivers because newborns can’t solve those problems on their own. You simply have no choice but to interrupt your own forty winks and get up to feed, change, and rock them back to sleep.
To break the vicious cycle, you need to nip the unhealthy routine in the bud.
While it’s possible for your baby to already develop a healthier sleeping habit during this period, I would caution you not to keep hopes too high. Each baby exhibits a unique sleep pattern. If you’re lucky, yours will start sleeping through the night — which technically translates to 5-6 hours straight at this point — by 8 or 12 weeks.
Therefore, the goal of this first phase of our sleep training is to develop relaxation routines, create a conducive environment, and form habits. And we will do this together!
